The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to the American public and the European Union regarding the sale of two of the three most common types of drug used to treat and prevent heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The FDA has ordered the company to remove the top three selling drugs from the market, and the FDA also notified the European Union that it has suspended the use of Nexium, the company’s purple pill.
The FDA issued a similar announcement on Nov. 1.
In a news release, the agency said that the European Union has asked the drug company to stop the sales of these medicines because of the possible increase in the number of people affected by heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The European Union also said that the company would not be required to update the information on its website about the sales of these medicines.
A study published in the journalFamilies & Familiesby the British Medical Journal found that the overall number of people affected by heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms was lower than it was in the previous survey. The study was published inUrologiain November 2010.
The study found that the number of people affected by heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms decreased from 10.8 million in 2003 to 6.5 million in 2011. The FDA said it was concerned about the impact of heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms on the market.
